I majored in Italian in college and took a great class on the the Divine Comedy. Inferno is the best of the three. Much more juicy than Purgatory or Paradiso.

Get yourself a study guide is best recommendation I'd have. It's not the easiest read. :-]
A theatre professor I had raved about it to the point I promised myself I would never read it. (Because sometimes I'm spiteful like that). If it IS a good read, let me know and I might break down and read it!
ditto what Jon said about the study guide - I slogged through it over a semester at Uni and, well, that's about all I remember about it, other than the really gruesome "illustrations" that went along with it
what's the deal - War and Peace to light a read for you??

Umm, I told you, watch Flashdance...there's at least 4 of the 7 rings of hell displayed on film for you...though it is the best film about a welder I've ever seen...
